“I know how my business is doing, right down to the last penny.”

This could be controversial, especially coming from an accountant, but if you do know how your business is doing down to the last penny, then you need help. (I don’t mean psychologically!)

Whilst it is good for a business to manage its finances properly (every penny should be accounted for), getting involved in the detail takes those running the business away from what they are good at, which is promoting their product or service. Unless you are a very small business, getting involved in the finance side of things is too much.

What advantage do you get from knowing where “your last penny” goes over knowing where your last tenner, hundred pounds or thousand pounds has been spent?

Don’t get sucked into parts of the business that shouldn’t have your attention, get someone else to look after those. Don’t get bogged down in the detail, get someone else to tell you how the finances are and how the business is doing.

If the detail needs to be looked at, let someone else do it and let them summarise what’s going on.

Use this information to help you concentrate on the bigger picture.

Business owners can then get on with the important stuff, promoting their products and improving the company.
